Do you want to make money doing what you love?

I know. Stupid question, right? I can’t think of many people who would say no to that question, but how many people think it’s possible?

Well… I for one know it’s possible. I believe with the right tools and the right attitude, we can all make a living doing what we love.

How do I find my passion?

These are the questions I have been asking myself for years. My guess is that you have also been asking yourself these same questions.

For a long time I have always felt that photography, writing, traveling and surfing were just hobbies and in my wildest dreams I had not imagined that I would actually be able to turn my hobbies into a career.

 

Start by asking yourself a couple of important questions:

1.) If money wasn’t a concern, what would you do with your time?

2.) What are your hobbies?

3.) What do other people say you are good at?

4.) Which one of your skills do you think you can use to benefit other people?

 

Believe In Yourself

One of the things that always kept me down was the thought, “I’m not good enough.” I would notice how other people were more advanced than me and it seemed they had more experience or more talent. I realized this was just a way for me to avoid the thought of failing at something I love. If I never tried, then I could always just keep them as a hobby, which is the safe option.

When I finally started believing in myself and made the decision to put all of my free time and energy into building a business based on my passions, I knew I wouldn’t be able to do it alone. I started taking classes in photography, writing, and entrepreneurship.

 

Surround Yourself with Positivity

It’s not uncommon for successful people to listen to a lot of motivational material and surround themselves with other successful people who are trying to do the same things.

Starting a business based on your passion is a lot harder if you don’t find support and surround yourself with positive people who believe what you are doing is possible.

In order to be successful you need to build a positive mindset and make it a priority to do things that will keep your spirits lifted. You will especially need this during the tough times you encounter while building your business.

It’s been a little less than a year since I made the decision to put my heart and soul into this endeavor, and even though it hasn’t been easy, I’ve finally realized I have something valuable to offer the world.

Even though I’ve had to withstand rejection letters, I’ve also celebrated many accomplishments. A few weeks ago, I got an email from National Geographic Traveler. Up until this point, I had not heard back regarding a story that I had sent to them six months earlier.

The email informed me they had been considering my story for the magazine. I know receiving a response from magazine editors can take time, and many times even if a story is good they just can’t make it fit into their upcoming publications. They said at this time it wouldn’t work for a feature, but they wanted me to do a short write up about it. Naturally, I was thrilled! Well, I still am.

I reached for the stars, even after a teacher of mine suggested it was tough to get into a magazine of this caliber, and I was pleasantly surprised at the result. This just goes to show that we should ignore the naysayers in our lives. Follow your heart instead!
